6.2.3. Check of the rechargeable battery

Check of level of electrolyte

The distilled water can be necessary for carrying out work.

Serial rechargeable batteries once, under usual conditions, have enough filled-in electrolyte on all service life of the battery. Nevertheless, at high external temperatures and after battery charging, and also when carrying out maintenance it is necessary to check electrolyte level.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. The rechargeable battery is in a motive compartment. Open a battery casing, having opened clips, and press a casing down.
2. Check outside electrolyte level via the transparent case of the battery. If in one of sections the level of electrolyte fell below MIN marking, turn out a stopper.
ATTENTION

If the level of electrolyte cannot be determined, turn out a stopper and glance in the battery. Do not use at the same time naked flame. There is a danger of explosion!

3. Average traffic jams are closed by the block of safety locks. To remove the block, squeeze levels and cast away a cover.
4. Disconnect a negative cable (–) of the rechargeable battery at the switched-off ignition.

ATTENTION

Thereof information from electronic blocks of memory as, for example, a radio receiver code is erased. Without code the radio receiver can be switched on only by the manufacturer or in conditions HUNDRED AUDIS. Therefore study remarks in the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.

5. Thereof information from electronic blocks of memory as, for example, a radio receiver code is erased. Without code the radio receiver can be switched on only by the manufacturer or in conditions HUNDRED AUDIS. Therefore study remarks in the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.
6. Fill with the distilled water each section separately to mark MOVE.
7. Screw and tighten a stopper.
8. Insert into place the main block of safety locks and fix it by a nut –2–.
9. In conclusion charge the battery, at the same time address the subsection Check of a Condition of the Battery, care of it and charging.
10. At suspicion on malfunction of the battery measure rest tension, at the same time address the following subsection.
11. Attach a negative cable (–) to the battery.
ATTENTION

Make active automatic equipment of safety of power windows, enter a radio tape recorder code, establish hours, at the same time address the section Automatic transmission and models with the four-wheel drive.

12. Fix by clips a casing of the rechargeable battery.

Check of fastening of plugs of the rechargeable battery and holder

ATTENTION

If the rechargeable battery is badly fixed or plugs are not fixed, then premature failure of the battery because of vibration, ignition of cables or malfunction in operation of electric equipment can turn out to be consequence. As at not attached battery the memories given electronic blocks, for example, of the radio receiver are erased, get acquainted with the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery and the subsection Input of a Code of the Radio Receiver.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Move plugs of the rechargeable battery in different directions and check reliability of their fastening, if necessary tighten.
2. If the rechargeable battery is badly fixed, tighten a fastening bolt the moment of 20 N of m.

Check of tension of rest

The condition of the rechargeable battery is checked by voltage measurement by the voltmeter which is switched on between battery poles.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Disconnect the rechargeable battery, at the same time address the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.
2. In 2 hours before check the battery has to be switched-off.
3. Attach the voltmeter to plugs of the battery and measure tension.
4. Tension size assessment:

12.5 In or more – the battery in good shape
12.4 In or less – the battery in bad condition, it needs to be loaded or replaced with new.
5. Attach a negative cable (–).
ATTENTION

Make active automatic equipment of power windows, and also establish hours and enter a radio receiver code, at the same time address the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery and подразделуВвод a radio receiver code.

Check of the rechargeable battery under loading

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Attach the voltmeter to battery plugs.
2. Start the engine and check tension.
3. At engine launch at completely charged battery tension should not fall lower than 10 V (at a temperature of electrolyte about +20 °C).
4. If tension sharply falls and density of electrolyte in various sections is various, the battery is damaged and it needs to be replaced.

Check of density of electrolyte

Electrolyte density in combination with tension gives an exact idea of a condition of a charge of the battery. For check of density of electrolyte serves денсиметр. When checking the battery temperature of electrolyte has to be not less than +10 °C.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Switch off ignition.
2. Turn out all traffic jams from the battery. If there is a roof, remove it at first the screw-driver.
3. Insert денсиметр into one of sections of the battery and gain the amount of electrolyte sufficient for emersion of a float. The more the specific weight (density) of electrolyte, the more emerges a float. On a scale it is possible to consider electrolyte density in terms of the specific weight (g/ml) or in Baume's degrees (+ ° Ve).
4. Density of electrolyte has to be not less than 1.24 g/ml – address Specifications. If density low, the battery it is necessary to load.
5. Check one after another each section. All sections have to have the identical density (the greatest difference of 0.04 g/ml). If the difference is more, the battery is faulty.

Charging of the rechargeable battery

ATTENTION

Before a charge of the rechargeable battery study remarks on the security measures given in the subsection Removal and installation of the rechargeable battery.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Do not switch-off the rechargeable battery at the working engine.
2. Never close the battery накоротко, i.e. do not connect positive (+) and negative poles (–). At the same time the battery is warmed and can burst.
3. Do not use an open flame near the battery. Electrolyte is poisonous. Do not allow its hit in eyes, on skin and on clothes. Otherwise plentifully wash out electrolyte water.
4. At the battery with the central gas outlet, at a charge, do not turn out a stopper (crosswise vents).
5. Before charging of the frozen battery let's it thaw. The charged battery freezes at a temperature about 65 °C, the semi-charged battery at a temperature about 30 °C and discharged at a temperature about 12 °C. After thawing check the battery for existence of cracks. If necessary replace.
6. At a battery charge the normal charger or the device with the accelerated charging remove the battery. At least, disconnect a negative and positive cable (+).

At use of the portable charger (small current) charging can be carried out without removal of the battery. The connecting cable to onboard network is not required to be disconnected at the same time. It is necessary to consider data of the manufacturer of the battery, naturally.

Charging

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove the rechargeable battery.
2. Check electrolyte level. If necessary add the distilled water, at the same time address appropriate section.
3. You make a charge of the battery only in well aired room or in the open air. At a battery charge without its removal from the car open a cowl.
4. Check whether the exhaust hose is pressed and whether the exhaust branch pipe is littered.
5. If on the device for a bystry charge it is possible to regulate current, establish current of a charge, equal 10% of capacity of the battery, i.e. at the capacity of 50 Ach establish current of a charge it is possible to accept about 5 A. Vremey ravnym10 hour.
6. At the switched-off device for a charge attach a positive cable (+) devices to a positive pole (+) batteries. A negative cable (–) connect devices to a negative pole of the battery (–).
7. Insert the network plug of the device for a charge into the socket. If it is necessary, turn on the device.
8. If the battery is charged with a direct current, check battery temperature, having put on it a palm. Electrolyte temperature during a charge should not exceed +55 °C. Otherwise interrupt process of charging or lower charging current.
9. After the termination of a charge switch off the device (if it is possible) and disconnect the network plug of the charger.
10. Disconnect a charger cable from the rechargeable battery.
11. Check a battery charge, at the same time address the subsection Check of a Condition of the Battery, care of it and charging.
12. Install the battery into place, at the same time address appropriate section.

Remarks for the rechargeable battery with traffic jams

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Before a charge turn out from the battery of a stopper or the narrow screw-driver uncover and slightly close it openings. Thus, spraying of electrolyte owing to formation of gases will be excluded.
2. You make a charge until from all sections gas does not go plentifully, and tension and density of electrolyte during three following one after another within three hours of measurements will not change.
3. After end of a charge of the battery let's it leave to gases within 20 min. Then close traffic jams.

Charging of strongly discharged and sulfatirovanny rechargeable battery

The rechargeable battery, long time which was not used (for example, at the long parking of the car), is discharged and sulfatirutsya over time. If tension of idling of the battery lies lower than 11.6 In, then the battery is considered strongly discharged. Check rest tension. At strongly discharged battery electrolyte consists almost of one water.
ATTENTION

At a negative temperature such battery can freeze, and the case of the battery to burst.
Strongly discharged battery sulfatirutsya, i.e. on a surface of electrodes large slightly soluble crystals of sulphurous lead are formed. Electrolyte at the same time loses transparency and gets weak white coloring.
If strongly discharged battery is charged directly after the category, sulphation happens again. Otherwise plates of the battery continue to harden and the possibility of a charge of the battery for a long time remains limited.
Strongly discharged and sulfitirovanny battery has to be charged with the lowered current about 5%, i.e. at, for example, capacity of the battery 60 of Ach force of charging current has to make 3 A.
Tension of a charge has to make no more than 14.4 Century.
It is impossible to charge strongly discharged battery with the device for a bystry charge at all.

Bystry charging / help at start

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Charge with the device for a bystry charge the battery only for ensuring start of the car. At the same time force of charging current makes 20% and more from battery capacity. At the same time the battery is damaged since is affected by big currents. Time not used and strongly discharged battery is long it is not necessary to load with the device for a bystry charge since it leads to sulphation.
Storage of the rechargeable battery
2. If the car was not used more than two months, the rechargeable battery needs to be removed and charged. Optimum temperature of storage of the battery makes from 0 to +27 °C. At these temperatures a battery self-discharge minimum. It is necessary to charge the battery at least once in two months, otherwise it becomes useless.

The battery which was not used a long time (for example, the car was not operated), is discharged and, besides, can sulfatirovatsya. If such battery is charged with the device for a bystry charge, it does not perceive charging current or owing to sulphation becomes too quickly "completely" loaded. Actually the battery is damaged.

Before defining the battery as damaged it is necessary to check the following:
3. Electrolyte density. If the difference between density in separate sections does not exceed 0.04 g/ml, then it is necessary to charge the battery with the normal charger.
4. After a charge check the battery under loading. If characteristics of the battery below given in Specifications, the battery is damaged.
5. If electrolyte density in one or in two next sections considerably differs (for example, in five sections of 1.16 g/ml, and in the sixth 1.08 g/ml) the battery has short circuit and it needs to be replaced.
