2.2. General information on control

The term "control" is used in this manual rather for designation of a complex of procedures, than one separate procedure.

If from the moment of purchase of the car the schedule of routine maintenance is strictly observed, frequent inspections of level of liquids and a state subject to the increased wear of components will be carried out as it is offered in this manual, the engine will long remain in the good working condition, and need for carrying out any additional work will be minimized.

Is more often, however, happens so that the engine works inefficiently owing to neglect with regular service. Even more often it happens upon purchase of the used car which owners did not trouble themselves frequent and regular checks and service. In this case, besides performance of ordinary procedures for routine maintenance, it will be necessary to make setup of the engine.

The first step in any procedure of control or diagnostics for the purpose of improvement of operation of the engine is check of extent of compression in cylinders. Check of a compression (address the subsection Check of a Compression in engine cylinders) will help to define a condition of internal components of the engine and has to serve as the index when carrying out control and repair. If, for example, check of extent of compression indicates serious internal wear of the engine, usual control will not help to improve its work and will be waste of time and money. As the procedure of check of extent of compression is extremely important, the expert owning the equipment which is specially intended for this purpose has to see off it.

Reduction of the engine in the good working condition most often requires performance of the following procedures.

Minimum settings


· Check of all liquids connected with operation of the engine ( the subsection Check of a Condition of Tires and Pressure in them)
· Check of a condition of all hoses of a motive compartment (subsection Check of a State and Replacement of Hoses of a Motive Compartment, localization of leaks)
· Check and adjustment of a tension of driving belts (subsection Check of a Condition of Driving Ridge Belts)
· Cleaning, survey and check of a charge of the battery (subsection Check of a Condition of the Battery, care of it and charging)
· Replacement of spark plugs or incandescence ( subsection Check and replacement of spark plugs)
· Survey of VV of wires of candles, except models with direct ignition
· Check of the air filter (subsection Replacement of the Filtering Element of the Air Filter)
· Check of the cooling system (subsection Check of Functioning of the Cooling System)

General settings

All listed above points of the minimum control, plus...

· Check of system of ignition or preheat
· Check of system of a charge
· Check of fuel system
· Replacement of VV of wires of spark plugs, except models with direct ignition

The card of viscosity of the applied motive oils

Petrol engines
And all-weather oils with the increased antifrikatsionny properties, the VW 500 001 specification)
In all-weather oils, VW 501 011 specification)

1) Behind designation of this specification there has to be a date not earlier than 10.91

Turbodiesel engines

The cover of a jellied mouth of oil is located in a cover of a head of cylinders – every time before opening it, be convinced that a surface around a mouth pure

Level of oil has to remain between two tags, it is desirable at the level or is close from top them them – if it not so, add oils to the top tag. The amount of oil between the marks MIN and MOVE makes 1 l. Two options of execution of the index of level of oil are shown

The broad tank (the cooler tank) is located in a side part of a motive compartment. Liquid level on the cold engine has to be between tags of MIN and MAX. On the hot engine perhaps some excess of level of the mark MAX. If necessary uncover and add a cooler
